Welcome to Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity homeownership provides secure affordable housing to low-income individuals who have been precariously sheltered in substandard rental units. Habitat for Humanity believes homeownership is a vital step in creating self-esteem in both families and  neighborhoods, and is the most basic way to break successive generations of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity is an equal opportunity program. Families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to partner and accept responsibility, and their ability to pay the mortgage. Individuals from all races, sexes, and creeds are encouraged to apply.

However, homeowner applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

Need

Presently reside in housing that is substandard in some way or inadequate due to any of the following – housing not maintained by a landlord, cost of housing, overcrowded housing, temporary housing, or etc. Living in subsidized housing does not preclude a family from consideration.

 Meet income guidelines

The total household income must be enough to ensure that the new homeowners will be able to pay the low monthly mortgage payments, taxes and insurance. You must be willing to allow Habitat for Humanity to verify your income from employment and any assets that you may have.

Ability to pay for the house

  • A family makes mortgage payments, including insurance and taxes, of approximately 30% of gross monthly income.
  • This payment does not include utilities, which can average a minimum of $300 per month.
  • Mortgage payments will be reviewed annually for affordability.

Willingness to partner

  • Habitat works closely with each family through the entire process.
  • Families must be willing to contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” on the construction sites or other volunteer assignments.
