Own A Home

Homeowner Flyer Habitat 2017

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha is a non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing to build wealth and hope through home ownership.

Habitat for Humanity sells homes to low-income families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowner’ monthly mortgage payments go into a “Fund for Humanity” that is used to build more homes.  The more homes that exist, the more cash flow there is available for further building.

Families in need of affordable housing partner with Habitat by contributing time and effort to the construction of their own homes and/or the homes of other Partner Families. Habitat believes in a hand up, not a hand out.

The family selection process is overseen by a staff-supported Committee that includes people who bring expertise with respect to various challenges faced by families and children in low-income situations.

Habitat for Humanity partners with families who are ready for the responsibility and challenges of homeownership but who would not qualify for a traditional mortgage.  The selection of families is based on three principles:  need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.
