HYP!

Big Thank 315373_569860129702623_69249283_nyou to Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough

The main focus of the Habitat Youth Program, or HYP! Is to create an opportunity for students of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds and school communities to come together and work collectively toward a common goal.  Habitat for Humanity Peterborough &Kawartha Region, we believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to all- this is the foundation upon which a strong, healthy community is built.

Through HYP, Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region is seeking to broaden its reach into the community and create a more diverse, dynamic organization actively providing youth with the opportunity to  volunteer, advocate and develop marketable skills that will serve them in future career opportunities within our community.

Thanks to a grant awarded by The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough last week, it will be possible for even more local youth to become involved in the construction of a safe, affordable home for a local hardworking family in need of a hand up.  The $4000 investment made by various funds held by the foundation will provide the necessary safety, health and environmental training and certification for 40 students currently enrolled at Peterborough Alternative Continuing Education, or PACE, and see them actively involved in building a Habitat home from the ground up.  These students will simultaneously earn credits toward graduation and credits at Fleming’s Skilled Trades Institute with the goal of encouraging these local youth to pursue post-secondary education.
The Habitat experience provides a rewarding introduction to volunteering with a   respected local not for profit, serves to break down barriers among different communities, allows for acquisition of valuable hands on experience and encourages long-term civic engagement. It is important not only to educate future generations to the impact that poverty has on us all, but also to give them the knowledge and tools to become part of the solution right now, while they are searching for ways to make a difference.  Empowering today’s youth to use their creativity and resolve to find sustainable solutions to societal issues will only reinforce that they hold in their hands the knowledge and power to impact the world they are living in.

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough and Kawartha Region gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, a public foundation serving the City and County of Peterborough. The Community Foundation builds charitable funds for the changing needs and opportunities in the community and provides grants to charitable organizations whose projects contribute to the equality of life in the region.

 The Start of HYP!

2012 marks the launch of our all-new Habitat Youth Program (HYP). HYP is an exciting new initiative aimed at engaging Peterborough’s youth directly in assisting local families to break the cycle of poverty through home ownership. HYP participants are given the opportunity to advocate, assist on a build site, and fundraise through event organization and participation.

Habitat for Humanity Youth Program and the Peterborough Rotary Club have teamed up in order to help raise awareness of local affordable housing crisis, and to bring helping hands to the community.  The Rotary club has chosen to work with, and be the premiere sponsor to HYP – Habitat Youth Program, and have committed to donating $100,000 to the program over the next 5 years.  The Rotarians have also taken on the role of being mentors for the youth and volunteers, and the two groups have promised to work together to build five homes in the local area over the span of 5 years.

Both organizations are very excited to be working together, and share the same ideas of bringing communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership,  as well as getting young people in the community involved.

The HYP! Youth Council

HYP is guided by our Youth Council, a group of extremely dedicated and enthusiastic local youth leaders who are responsible for executing a strategic plan that they themselves have developed. These are extraordinary young people motivated by a need to positively impact the lives of youth  in our community and around the world. The Youth Council reaches out to area schools, associations, and the community at large in an effort to cultivate a spirit of action and advocacy, providing them with a greater sense of social justice and responsibility.
